Eliminate Varicose & Spider Veins with Non-Surgical Treatments
EVLT - Laser Closure
Q: What are varicose & spider veins?
A: Varicose veins are dilated enlarged veins underneath
the skin of the legs. While mainly a cosmetic problem they may cause fatigue and
leg aches. Much smaller veins within the skin are called ?spider? veins and may
be present with or without the larger varicose veins.
Q: What causes varicose and spider veins?
A: Hereditary factors as well as the effects of gravity
result in the failure of the delicate tissue valves within the vein. Once these
valves fail, there is progressive stretching and enlargement of the vein walls.
Frequently varicose veins become worse following pregnancy and childbirth.
Q: What treatments are available?
A: While surgery has been the mainstay for varicose
vein treatment, other NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS include EVLT (laser closure)and Foam
Sclerotherapy. A complete evaluation by Dr. Garfinkle will determine which method(s)
are most appropriate for each individual.
Q: Is there treatment for veins on the face?
A: Facial veins on the cheeks, nose and chin respond
well to sclerotherapy. There is minimal swelling and cosmetic improvement is usually
apparent in 1-2 weeks.
Q: How is sclerotherapy performed?
A: The veins are injected with a chemical solution
that results in scarring of the diseased vein segment. Blood is then rerouted through
the healthy veins.
Q: How many treatments are required?
A: 2-4 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart are common. However,
fewer or more treatments may be required depending on an individual?s needs.
Q: Is the procedure painful?
A: Most patients experience minimal discomfort.
Q: Are there any risks?
A: All medical treatments entail a certain degree of
risk. This will be discussed during your consultation. With sclerotherapy treatment
complications rarely occur.
Q: Once treated, will the veins come back?
A: Successfully treated veins will not reappear. However,
new ones may develop in the future.
Q: What about activity after treatment?
A: Activity without restriction is encouraged. Hot
baths and Jacuzzi tubs are discouraged until healing is complete. You may return
to work the same day.
Q: What tests are required?
A: An ultrasound examination of the venous system in
the legs is performed when appropriate prior to treatment.
Q: Will my legs be bandaged?
A: With larger veins, bandages or compression stockings
will be required. Smaller veins require overnight compression bandages only.

The Non-Surgical, No Scar Way to Eliminate Varicose Veins
Remember life before bulging, twisted varicose veins? You can have that freedom
again with the EVLT procedure. Tens of millions of people - up to 40% of women and
25% of men - suffer from this condition. Traditionally, surgery was previously the
best treatment option. Now there’s safe, fast, and comfortable EVLT (Endo
Venous Laser Treatment).
Q: How does EVLT Eliminate Varicose Veins?
A: The twisted bulging that causes discomfort and embarrassment
results from faulty valves in the veins. As blood flows through your veins to the
heart, stop valves are supposed to prevent the blood from flowing backwards as gravity
pulls it down. If the valves don?t close properly, blood pools in the vein, forcing
the walls to enlarge and bulge. EVLT uses targeted laser energy to seal the vein
shut and help you look and feel better fast.
• Treatment in less than an hour.
• Can be performed in the doctor’s office.
• Immediate relief of symptoms.
• Return to normal activity immediately - with little or no pain.
• No anesthesia or hospitalization.
• No scars.
Q: What is the EVLT Procedure?
A: EVLT is a quick, minimally invasive laser procedure
that leaves no scar and can be performed in your doctor?s office. The treatment
takes less than one hour. Here?s what to expect:
• Your doctor uses ultrasound to map out your vein.
• Local anesthetic is applied.
• A thin laser fiber is inserted through a tiny entry point, usually near the
knee.
• Laser energy is delivered to seal the faulty vein.
• Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged. Normal daily activity
can be resumed (just avoid rigorous activities, such as gym workouts).
• There may be minor soreness and bruising. Any discomfort can be treated with
over-the-counter, non-aspirin pain relievers as needed.
Q: How does EVLT work?
A: The laser energy damages the vein walls, shrinking
them and closing the faulty vein so that the blood cannot flow through it. This
eliminates the bulging vein at its source.
Q: Is loss of this vein a problem?
A: No. After treatment, the blood in the faulty veins
will be diverted to the many normal veins in the leg.
Q: What are the complications of this procedure?
A: The only minimal complications experienced with
EVLT have been a small number of cases of numbness that passes quickly.
Q: Am I at risk from the laser?
A: No. Just as a precaution against accidental firing
of laser energy outside the body, you will be given a pair of special glasses to
protect your eyes.
Q: How successful is EVLT?
A: Published clinical studies show that EVLT has a
98% initial success rate with excellent long-term results.
